Vaccinations
Description:
Rabies Vaccine Requirements per EU 576/2013 Annex III
- Rabies vaccines must be administered by an authorized veterinarian.
- All pets must wait at least 21 days, or the time designated by the rabies vaccine manufacturer prior to traveling to the port of entry.
- Rabies vaccination not required for dogs under 12 weeks
Certifications
Description:
The EU has two versions of the pet health certificate: the "non-commercial" and the "commercial." Both health certificate versions require an Accredited Veterinarian to issue the health certificate and then USDA to endorse the health certificate before your pet's travel.
- From EU:Official pet passport required (correctly completed)
- From third countries:Veterinary certificate and ownership declaration required
- Must be accompanied by required documentation specific to rabies risk status of origin country
Microchip
Your pet must have a working microchip (also called a “transponder”) before getting its rabies vaccination for travel to the EU.

Dogs from Malaysia: ELISA test for Nipah virus required with sample drawn 10 days before travel (negative result required) Entry only via Basel, Geneva or Zurich airports by direct air transport Dogs must be presented at red customs exit on arrival

Rabies antibody titre test required Blood sample taken minimum 30 days after completion of primary vaccination (within validity period of vaccination) Test result must be 0.5 IU/ml or higher Test must be performed at approved laboratory 3-month waiting period from blood collection in high-risk country until entry to Switzerland Entry only via Basel, Geneva or Zurich airports by direct air transport Dogs must be presented at red customs exit on arrival If transit through unlisted/high-risk country, transit declaration required stating dog had no contact with rabies-carrying animals and remained secured in aircraft or airport Processing only during regular opening hours of border veterinary office Dogs arriving outside opening hours taken to animal facility and inspected next working day (owner charged for transport and expenses)

- Puppies up to 8 weeks: may only enter if accompanied by mother
- Dogs 12-16 weeks: must have written confirmation of no contact with wild rabies-susceptible animals if entry within 21 days of vaccination
- Dogs with docked ears and/or tails cannot be brought into Switzerland
