Vaccinations

Description:

Rabies vaccination rules depend on the origin country group (EU/equivalent, monitored third countries, or countries where rabies is not under control).

Pet must be microchipped before (or at the same time as) rabies vaccination; if chipped after, revaccination is required.
Pet must be at least 12 weeks old for a valid primary rabies vaccination.
After the primary rabies vaccination, wait at least 21 days before travel.
Booster vaccinations must be given before the prior vaccination expires to avoid resetting to a new primary vaccination.

Certifications

Description:

Required for dogs entering Sweden from EU countries. Some non-EU countries (Andorra, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Northern Ireland, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican City) can issue passport-like documents; otherwise a health certificate is needed.

Passport must include the microchip ID and date of ID-marking (and both IDs if re-marked).
Passport must include rabies vaccination details and validity.
Passport must include species/sex/DOB, owner name, and owner signature.
Only designated EU veterinarians can issue EU passports or enter information in them.

Description:

Used when a passport is not valid/available. For certain origin situations, this is the standard certificate to travel with a pet.

For countries outside the EU, the certificate must be issued and stamped by an official veterinarian / central veterinary authority.
If a country will not accept another country’s form, it may use its own certificate based on the EU templates referenced by Sweden.

Description:

Used to certify the pet is yours and is not being moved to change owner (e.g., sale/rehoming/adoption), and to authorize transport in certain cases.

Required when the animal does not change owner and travels under conditions requiring an owner declaration (notably when documentation must prove non-commercial intent).

Description:

You must notify Swedish Customs when arriving with your animal. Rules differ slightly depending on origin and whether you can use online notification.

Failure to notify customs can result in denial of entry.

Microchip

Dog must be ID-marked with an ISO microchip. Microchip must be implanted before rabies vaccination (or at the same time). If the chip is not readable at the border, the animal may be sent back, quarantined, or euthanized. If the dog has a legible tattoo made before 3 July 2011 (and certified), a microchip may not be required. If the chip is not ISO, you may need your own reader.

Sweden does not require deworming for import because the fox tapeworm is already present in Sweden, but the authority strongly recommends treatment before travel.

Ferrets follow the same rabies framework as dogs/cats, with requirements depending on origin country group. From countries where rabies is not under control, a rabies antibody titre test and waiting period apply.

Ferret must be microchipped before (or at the same time as) rabies vaccination; if chipped after, revaccination is required.
Ferret must be at least 12 weeks old for a valid primary rabies vaccination.
After the primary rabies vaccination, wait at least 21 days before travel.
If traveling from a country where rabies is not under control: a titre test is required; blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after vaccination; results must show at least 0.5 IU/ml; health certificate cannot be issued until at least 3 months after the blood sample date.

Titre Test + Waiting Period (High-rabies origins)

For ferrets arriving from countries where rabies is not under control, a rabies antibody titre test and a minimum 3-month wait before certification apply.

Blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the last rabies vaccination (or 30 days after the second dose if two-dose primary series).
Result must be at least 0.5 IU/ml and tested at an EU-approved lab.
Health certificate cannot be issued until at least 3 months after the blood sample date.
If vaccination expires during the waiting period and no timely booster is given, a new sample is required and the 3-month period restarts.

Entry Point / Customs

If entering the EU via another member state, the animal must be checked and the health certificate stamped at the Entry Point; missing stamps can cause refusal. Direct arrivals to Sweden from non-EU origins should be planned via designated airports.

If entering via another EU country: check and stamp at the Entry Point is required for onward travel.
Direct to Sweden from outside the EU: plan arrival via Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter for these cases.
