Vaccinations
Description:

Rabies vaccination rules depend on the origin country group (EU/equivalent, monitored third countries, or countries where rabies is not under control).

  • Pet must be microchipped before (or at the same time as) rabies vaccination; if chipped after, revaccination is required.
  • Pet must be at least 12 weeks old for a valid primary rabies vaccination.
  • After the primary rabies vaccination, wait at least 21 days before travel.
  • Booster vaccinations must be given before the prior vaccination expires to avoid resetting to a new primary vaccination.
Certifications
Description:

Required for dogs entering Sweden from EU countries. Some non-EU countries (Andorra, Gibraltar, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Northern Ireland, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican City) can issue passport-like documents; otherwise a health certificate is needed.

  • Passport must include the microchip ID and date of ID-marking (and both IDs if re-marked).
  • Passport must include rabies vaccination details and validity.
  • Passport must include species/sex/DOB, owner name, and owner signature.
  • Only designated EU veterinarians can issue EU passports or enter information in them.
Microchip

Dog must be ID-marked with an ISO microchip. Microchip must be implanted before rabies vaccination (or at the same time). If the chip is not readable at the border, the animal may be sent back, quarantined, or euthanized. If the dog has a legible tattoo made before 3 July 2011 (and certified), a microchip may not be required. If the chip is not ISO, you may need your own reader.

Origin Requirements
  • fromEU_and_equivalent

EU & equivalent origins: Microchip + rabies vaccination + passport/health certificate as applicable; no deworming required for import into Sweden (recommendation only for dogs/cats). Must notify Swedish Customs on arrival.

  • fromThirdCountries_rabies_documented_and_monitored

Monitored third countries (incl. USA, Mexico, Japan, etc.): ISO microchip required and must be implanted before rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccination required with 21-day wait after primary vaccination. Sweden also notes it recommends ensuring adequate rabies antibody protection (titre test) for some situations.

  • fromThirdCountries_rabies_not_under_control

High-rabies / not under control origins: ISO microchip required; rabies vaccination required; rabies antibody titre test required (>=0.5 IU/ml at EU-approved lab); blood draw >=30 days after vaccination; plus a minimum 3-month wait before the health certificate can be issued. Depending on scenario, E9.207 or CANIS-FELIS-FERRETS health certificates apply; Entry Point stamping and customs declaration may apply.

More Info
Tapeworm (Echinococcus / fox tapeworm)

Sweden does not require deworming for import because the fox tapeworm is already present in Sweden, but the authority strongly recommends treatment before travel.

  • No deworming requirement for entry into Sweden.
  • Strong recommendation to deworm against the fox tapeworm (anti-echinococcus treatment) before travel.
Air Travel Note

Airlines can have additional rules for pets that must also be fulfilled.

  • Check airline requirements (carrier rules may exceed country requirements).
