Vaccinations
Description:

Rabies vaccination is required for dogs and cats entering Nigeria. NAQS public pages do not specify timing; for U.S.-origin pets, the USDA APHIS Nigeria dog/cat health certificate specifies the timeframe below.

  • Dog or cat must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before export/entry (per USDA APHIS certificate for Nigeria).
  • Rabies vaccination must be current on the day of travel, in accordance with the vaccine’s validity period.
Certifications
Description:

An import permit is required prior to shipment. Permits are issued under the authority of the Chief Veterinary Officer through the Federal Department of Veterinary and Pest Control Services (DVPCS) and processed with NAQS.

  • Apply for an import permit before travel, typically via the NAQS e-Services portal.
  • Carry the approved permit to present to NAQS officers at the port of entry.

Port Inspection and Quarantine

All arriving animals are subject to inspection by the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS). NAQS may require quarantine. The NAQS Animal Quarantine overview notes quarantine is typically 2–3 weeks, while the NAQS SOP provides that a reasonable quarantine period will be determined case-by-case.

  • Present the animal and documents to NAQS officers for inspection at the port of entry.
  • Comply with any quarantine directions issued by NAQS; duration is determined by NAQS.
