Vaccinations

Description:

Rabies vaccination is required for non-commercial entry under EU rules (Regulation (EU) No 576/2013). VMVT guidance applies to Lithuania.

Rabies vaccination must be administered by an authorised veterinarian.
For a primary vaccination, wait at least 21 days after the vaccination before entry.
Booster vaccinations remain valid without a new 21‑day wait if administered before the previous vaccination expires.

Certifications

EU pet passport (if issued in an EU Member State) or an EU animal health certificate issued in a third country.
Owner’s declaration confirming non‑commercial movement (per Article 7 of Regulation (EU) No 576/2013).
If the owner is not travelling with the pet, a written authorisation allowing an authorised person to move the pet non‑commercially.

Microchip

Pets must be identified with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant microchip. A clearly readable tattoo applied before 3 July 2011 is accepted. Identification must be in place before the rabies vaccination used for entry.

Non‑commercial movement conditions

EU rules apply to non‑commercial movements (Regulation (EU) No 576/2013). VMVT provides forms and guidance.

Movement must not be for sale or transfer of ownership.
No more than five pets may be moved non‑commercially.
Pets must accompany the owner or an authorised person within 5 days of the owner’s movement.
Carry the completed owner’s non‑commercial movement declaration; if applicable, carry the written authorisation form.

Points of entry and border checks

VMVT provides a list of travellers’ points of entry for non‑commercial movement of pet animals. For non‑commercial movements from third countries (except birds), border checks are performed by Lithuanian Customs; VMVT handles non‑compliance cases referred by Customs.

Post‑arrival pet registration

VMVT indicates that pets brought/relocated into Lithuania must be registered in the Lithuanian Pet Register (GAR) after arrival.
