Dogs Regulations

Vaccinations
Description:

Rabies vaccination and serologic titre are required for dogs from Category 2 countries (e.g., USA). Follow MAST Certificate D2 and guidance.

  • Dog must be microchipped before rabies vaccination.
  • Rabies vaccination administered after microchip implantation.
  • Rabies antibody titre: blood drawn at least 30 days after vaccination; result ≥ 0.5 IU/mL at an approved laboratory.
  • Wait at least 90 days after the blood draw (successful titre) before import.
Certifications
Description:

An import permit from the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (MAST) is required. Fees are set by MAST; confirm the current amount during application.

  • Obtain a MAST import permit before travel.
  • Coordinate admission with an approved quarantine station before booking transport.
Microchip

An ISO-compliant microchip is required and must be implanted before rabies vaccination.

Quarantine

Dogs are subject to quarantine on arrival in Iceland.

  • Minimum 14-day quarantine on arrival.
  • Quarantine occurs after entry via Keflavík Airport; admission must be coordinated with the quarantine station’s schedule in advance.
Residence/origin eligibility

Origin and residency requirements apply for pets entering Iceland.

  • USA is a Category 2 (rabies-controlled) origin for the purposes of D2/C2 guidance.
  • Pets must have remained in an approved country for at least the last 6 months or since birth.
  • Approved exporting country lists are reviewed periodically; verify the current list with MAST before planning travel.
Prohibitions and conditions

Certain dogs and conditions are not permitted under Icelandic regulations.

  • Import of wolf–dog hybrids (≥10 generations) and listed prohibited breeds (and their recent crosses) is not allowed.
  • Pregnant or lactating females are not permitted.
Transport restrictions

Transport restrictions apply to pet dogs entering Iceland.

  • Transport of pet dogs in the aircraft passenger cabin is not permitted for flights to Iceland, except for certified service dogs and in-airport transits, per Regulation 332/2024 and MAST FAQ.
Planning and timing

Pre-approval timelines and coordination are required.

  • Submit health certificate and test results to MAST 5–10 days prior to arrival for pre-approval.
  • Book quarantine admission before purchasing travel to ensure space and approved arrival timing.
  • Arrivals are limited to designated dates/times; weekend arrivals are generally not approved.
