Dog, Cat & Ferret Regulations

Select the animal regulations you want to view:
Vaccinations
Description:

Hungary follows the EU rules for the non-commercial movement of dogs, cats, and ferrets. Refer to NÉBIH’s guidance for details.

  • A valid rabies vaccination administered by an authorized veterinarian is required.
  • The primary rabies vaccination must be given after microchipping; a minimum of 21 days must elapse after the primary vaccination before entry.
  • Subsequent booster vaccinations must remain within validity; when continuously valid, a new 21‑day wait is not required.
  • If traveling from a country not listed by the EU (unlisted third country), a rabies antibody titration (FAVN) test is required: blood sample taken at least 30 days after vaccination, tested at an EU-approved laboratory, with a result of ≥0.5 IU/ml, followed by a 3‑month waiting period from the blood draw before entry to the EU.
Certifications
Description:

An EU animal health certificate for non-commercial movement is required when entering the EU from a third country. It must be issued by the competent authority/official veterinarian of the country of departure. U.S. travelers must have the certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS.

  • Obtain the EU animal health certificate for dogs/cats/ferrets issued by the official veterinarian of the country of departure.
  • Ensure endorsement by the competent authority of the exporting country (for the United States, USDA APHIS endorsement is required).
  • Carry supporting documentation proving identification (microchip) and rabies vaccination (and, if applicable, rabies antibody titration test results).
  • Use the certificate within its validity for entry into the EU; verify timing requirements with the issuing authority before travel.
Microchip

Each animal must be identified with a microchip compliant with ISO 11784/11785 that is implanted before rabies vaccination. A clearly readable tattoo applied before 3 July 2011 may be accepted if documented.
