Vaccinations
Rabies vaccination is required under Spain/EU rules. The pet must be identified by microchip before the rabies vaccination is administered, and at least 21 days must pass after a primary (first) rabies vaccination before entry.
- Valid rabies vaccination administered at ≥12 weeks of age
- Microchip implantation must occur before the rabies vaccination
- Wait at least 21 days after a primary rabies vaccination before entry
- Booster vaccinations must be valid on the day of entry per manufacturer’s schedule
- Rabies details (date, product, lot, microchip number) must match the EU health certificate
Certifications
Use the EU non-commercial model for Spain (EN-ES) when the owner (or a designated person) travels with the pet(s) within ±5 days and the movement is not for sale/transfer. The certificate must be completed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian and endorsed by USDA. Pets must arrive in the EU within 10 days of USDA endorsement.

More Info
Traveler Entry Points (PEV) – Canary Islands
Entry from non-EU countries into the Canary Islands must occur through designated Traveler Entry Points (Puntos de Entrada de Viajeros, PEV). The official list includes Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, Tenerife Norte, and Tenerife Sur.
- Arrive through a designated PEV listed by Spain’s MAPA
- Carry original endorsed certificates and supporting documents for inspection
Movement Type (non-commercial vs commercial)
Non-commercial movements: the owner or designated person travels with the pet(s) within ±5 days, with no intent to sell/transfer and generally no more than 5 pets. Otherwise, use the commercial model certificate and procedures.
- Confirm the movement qualifies as non-commercial before selecting the certificate model
- If non-commercial criteria are not met, use the 2025 commercial model and procedures
Using USDA-Accredited Vets and VEHCS
Work with a USDA-accredited veterinarian to complete the correct EU model certificate. Many certificates can be prepared and submitted via the Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS) for USDA endorsement.
- Locate a USDA-accredited veterinarian
- Prepare the certificate in VEHCS where available
- Allow sufficient time for USDA review/endorsement before travel
