Description:

Belgium follows EU rules for non-commercial movement of dogs, cats, and ferrets. Rabies vaccination requirements depend on the animal’s age and the country/territory of origin.

  • Rabies vaccination is required for entry into Belgium (EU pet movement rules).
  • Animal must be at least 12 weeks old at the time of rabies vaccination.
  • For a primary rabies vaccination, entry is allowed only after a 21-day waiting period following the date of vaccination (as defined by EU rules).
  • Depending on the origin country/territory, a rabies antibody titration test may be required before entry into the EU/Belgium.
  • If a titration test is required and is performed in a non-EU/third country context, EU entry may require waiting 3 months from the date the blood sample was taken (origin-dependent rule).

For animals moving within the EU (or re-entering Belgium from another EU Member State), the standard document is the EU Pet Passport issued by an authorized veterinarian in the EU.

Dogs, cats, and ferrets must be identified with a microchip compliant with EU requirements (commonly ISO 11784/11785). Identification must be done before rabies vaccination for the vaccination to be considered valid under EU rules.
