Support Animals

Service Animals:

Service Animal Policy

  • Service Animals are trained dogs that assist qualified persons with disabilities.
  • Carrier is PART 382-certified and reserves the right to refuse Service Animals due to aircraft size and safety.
  • Service Animals must behave properly and non-disruptively; disruptive or threatening animals will not be carried.
  • Service Animals must be noted in the reservation at least 48 hours prior to travel.
  • Neither owner nor Service Animal may occupy last row behind boarding door, emergency exit seats, or block emergency exits.
  • No fee for Service Animals unless the animal requires a separate seat due to size.
  • Passengers must bring a completed U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation form at check-in.
  • Service Animals have boarding priority over pets.
  • Accommodation may be denied due to aircraft limitations or safety concerns.

Emotional Support:

Emotional Support Animals (ESA) Policy

The U.S. Department of Transportation defines a Service Animal as an animal that assists persons with disabilities by providing emotional support. Southern Airways acknowledges this under their Service Animal policy.

Important notes:

  • Service Animals include those providing emotional support.
  • Service Animals must be individually trained or able to assist a person with a disability.
  • Proper documentation and a completed Service Animal Air Transportation form are required at check-in.
  • There is no fee for Service Animals unless the animal is too large to fit in the owner’s foot space, in which case additional seating must be purchased.
  • Service Animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered at all times.
  • Accommodation is subject to aircraft limitations and safety considerations.

Note: Emotional Support Animals are treated as Service Animals under this policy.

  • Pets must be harmless, clean, well-behaved, and require no attention during transit.

  • Normally two pets per flight are allowed: either two small pets under 15 lbs or one small and one large pet over 26 lbs; two large pets are generally not allowed.
  • Specific flight rules:
    • Southern Flights: Up to two pets with combined weight ≤15 lbs in one carrier charged $35 fee; pets 16-40 lbs must purchase a ticket.
