  • Kennels must fit under the seat.
  • The pet must remain in the kennel at the airport, during boarding and deplaning, and throughout all phases of flight.

Pet Embargo Currently in Effect: SkyWest Airlines has a temporary global embargo on household pet shipments. Exceptions apply only for active U.S. military or Foreign Service Officers traveling with permanent change of station orders. Restrictions may apply.

To book for U.S. military or diplomat travel, contact the Cargo Customer Service Center and provide a copy of permanent change of station orders.

Booking a Military Pet Shipment

  1. Confirm eligibility for travel.
  2. Confirm you have an IATA-compliant crate.
  3. Gather all required documents including permanent change of station orders.
  4. Contact the Cargo Customer Service Center to make your booking.
  5. Drop off your pet at a designated location with all required documentation.

Requirements & Restrictions

  • Comply with live animal policies and requirements.
  • Booking window: 1-14 days prior to departure.
  • Minimum age for cats and dogs: 12 weeks domestic, 15 weeks international; dogs entering U.S. must be at least 6 months old.
  • Other warm-blooded pets must be weaned, fledged, and self-feeding for at least 5 consecutive days.
  • Forecasted temperatures must be between 20-80°F while in airline care on ground.
  • All animals must be shipped in IATA-compliant containers.
  • Sedated or tranquilized animals are NOT allowed.
  • Restricted breeds and their mixes are prohibited due to health risks.
  • Professional Pet Shipper member of IPATA required for international shipments except military/FSO on active orders.
  • Additional destination country permits may be required; customer responsible for compliance.
  • Pet travel limited to one connecting city; interline shipments prohibited.
  • Puppies and kittens shipments must use product code PET; DASH shipments prohibited.

On the Day of Departure

  • Tender time: 6 hours before international departure; 4-6 hours before domestic departure.
  • Cut-off time: 4 hours international; 2.5 hours domestic.
  • Pets cannot be tendered the night before for early flights.
  • Pets will NOT be accepted if requirements are not met, or if ill, injured, aggressive, or deceased.

Crate Requirements

  • Crate must comply with IATA regulations and be large enough for pet to sit, stand, and turn around.
  • Crate size must follow aircraft compatibility guidelines.
  • Absorbent bedding required inside crate.
  • Water and food containers must be attached inside crate door.
  • Two dogs or cats allowed per crate only if both are 12 weeks to 6 months old, each under 20 lbs, and crate is large enough.
  • Acclimate pet to crate confinement prior to shipping.

Documentation

  • Shipper's Certification for Live Animals must be completed and presented.
  • Air waybill with animal details and 24-hour emergency contact required.
  • Domestic Health Certificate issued by USDA-accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel.
  • International Health Certificate endorsed by APHIS Veterinary Services or active-duty military veterinarian within 10 days.

Special Circumstances

  • Certificate of Acclimation required if forecasted temperature is between 20°F and 45°F during transport.
  • Letter from licensed veterinarian required if animal is in third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Import permits required for dogs from CDC high-risk rabies countries.

Booking, Drop-off, Acceptance & Recovery Times

  • Acceptance cut-off: 2.5 hours before domestic departure; 4 hours before international departure.
  • Drop-off: 4-6 hours before domestic departure; 6 hours before international departure.
  • Animals may not remain overnight at station.
  • Recovery time after arrival: 2 hours domestic; 4 hours international.

Temperature Guidelines

  • Temperature limits apply at all times while animal is on the ground in airline care.
  • Allowed temperature range: 20°F (-7°C) minimum to 80°F (27°C) maximum.
  • Temperature restrictions apply to dogs, cats, small mammals, zoo animals, primates, and pets shipped as household animals.
  • Restrictions do NOT apply to commercial bird shipments, day-old chicks, laboratory mice and rats, reptiles, amphibians, insects, hatching eggs, and live tropical fish.
  • Certificate of Acclimation required if temperature forecast is between 20°F and 45°F.

Additional Notes

  • All live animal shipments limited to one connection; nonstop or direct flights recommended.
  • Delta personnel confirm temperature suitability at check-in; alternate travel dates arranged if unsuitable.
  • Animals on embargoed breed list will be refused transportation at all times.
  • Acceptance depends on health and disposition; violent, ill, or distressed animals will not be accepted.
  • All live animal shipments require completion of Shipper Certification and Journey Declaration form presented at acceptance.
