When travelling with live animals, carriage forms part of the checked baggage allowance.

  • Passengers may bring one carry-on item weighing less than 7 kilograms.
  • Maximum total linear dimensions (length + width + height) for carry-on baggage: 115 cm.
  • Live animals are permitted on all domestic Air Chathams flights.

All animals, including dogs, cats, and other pets, must be securely caged with appropriate absorbent material.

  • Cage size and construction must comply with IATA live animal regulations.
  • Crates must be solid hard plastic; wooden or soft-shell crates are not permitted.

Live animals travelling without a passenger are subject to freight rates per kilogram plus a handling fee based on combined weight of the animal and crate.

Additional requirements apply for international flights.

All animals (dogs, cats, and other pets) must be properly and securely caged with appropriate absorbent material lining the base of the crate.

  • Crate must be IATA approved and made of solid hard plastic.
  • Wooden or soft-shell crates are not permitted.
  • Crate must be appropriately sized, lockable, and leak-proof.
  • No food, water, or other liquids may be open inside the crate.

Animals transported as freight should be dropped off and collected at the Air Chathams check-in desk in the terminal, except for those traveling to the Chatham Islands.

  • Animals to the Chatham Islands will be taken to the Air Chathams office for collection.
  • To collect animals at the Chatham Island Airport, contact the office prior to the flight to arrange.
Pets and other live animals cannot be held overnight at any Air Chathams premises and will be returned to the point of origin at the shipper's expense if not collected.

  • Pets and animals can be transported under certain conditions.
  • Animals can be sent unaccompanied as freight. Contact Air Chathams if travelling with a pet as part of your baggage.
  • Prebook the travel of your live animal or pet for any scheduled mainland New Zealand destinations.
  • Standard freight rates are charged per kilogram plus a live animal handling fee.
  • Rates are $3.00 per kilogram for flights between mainland New Zealand destinations, and $4.13 per kilogram for flights between mainland New Zealand and the Chatham Islands.
  • Live animal handling fees are $75 for animals in crates up to 23KG, $100 for animals in crates over 23KG but under 32KG. For animals in crates over 32KG, contact Air Chathams for rates.
  • All pets and animals must be securely caged with appropriate absorbent material lining the cage base. The cage must be lockable and leak-proof.
  • Animals transported as freight are to be dropped off and collected from the Air Chathams check-in desk. Animals transported to the Chatham Islands will be taken to the Air Chathams office for collection.
