Service Animals

  • Only trained service dogs are accepted (any breed) trained to assist persons with disabilities, including psychological disabilities.
  • Maximum of two trained service animals per passenger.
  • Dogs must comply with health requirements of departure, arrival, and transit countries.
  • Must be identifiable by dog tag or harness; proof of certification and use required.
  • Service dogs do not need to be muzzled; provide device if needed.
  • Must remain on a leash and be well behaved at all times.
  • Airline may refuse boarding for aggressive or disruptive behavior.
  • Notify airline at least 48 hours before departure.

Additional requirements for flights 8 hours or longer:

  • Veterinary certificate stating dog will not need to relieve itself during flight, or
  • List of items (diapers, medications) to avoid hygiene issues onboard.

Placement in aircraft:

  • Dog must sit on floor space in front of assigned seat, not blocking aisles or adjacent footwells.
  • Not allowed to sit in emergency exit row seats.
  • Maxi leg seat allowed if not next to emergency exit.

For travel to/from the United States (effective August 1, 2024):

  • Dog must be at least 6 months old.
  • Complete and print required CDC forms (Service Animal Air Transportation Form and Assistance Animal Hygiene Certificate).
  • For dogs only: submit CDC Dog Import Form and present CDC response at check-in and arrival.
  • For dogs only: comply with additional CDC requirements if dog has been in high-risk rabies countries in past 6 months.

Compartment:

In-Cabin Pet Carrier Rules

  • Only dogs and cats allowed in cabin.
  • Maximum combined weight of pet and carrier: 8kg (17 lbs).
  • Carrier dimensions must not exceed 43 x 35 x 20 cm.
  • Carrier must be waterproof, made of soft, supple material, and allow pet to be comfortable for duration of flight.
  • Pet must remain inside carrier with head enclosed during flight, carrier stowed under seat in front.
  • Only one pet per traveler allowed in cabin; two pets in same carrier not permitted.
  • Passengers traveling with pets in cabin cannot book Maxi Leg seats.
  • Transport of animals under 8 weeks old is prohibited.

Transport bag recommendations:

  • Soft material pet transport bags available at pet stores.

Regulations for travel to/from Reunion Island:

  • Declaration of conformity for transport in cabin required.
  • Mandatory identification (tattoo or microchip) and European passport.
  • Rabies vaccine not required for Reunion Island travel.

Regulations for travel to/from the United States (effective August 1, 2024):

  • Declaration of conformity for transport in cabin required.
  • Dogs must be at least 6 months old.

  • Valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at minimum 12 weeks old, current, dated more than 1 month and less than 1 year before travel).
  • Complete and submit CDC Dog Import Form and present CDC response at check-in and arrival (dogs only).
  • Comply with additional CDC requirements if dog has been in high-risk rabies countries in past 6 months (dogs only).
  • International health certificate dated less than 7 days before flight departure.

Snub-nosed breeds: Due to breathing difficulties risk, snub-nosed breeds are permitted in cabin with caution. Affected dog breeds include Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, Boxers, Bulldogs, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso, Pugs, Chow Chow, Mastiffs, certain Spaniels, Brussels Griffon, Lhasa Apso, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pekingese, Petit Brabançon, Shih Tzu, Shar Pei, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bully. Affected cat breeds include Burmese, Exotic Shorthair, Himalayan, Persian.

Cargo:

Checked/Cargo Pet Rules

  • Only dogs and cats allowed in the hold (AVIH) with airline permission.
  • French bulldogs not permitted in hold since August 11, 2015.
  • Animals under 8 weeks old prohibited in hold.
  • Malodorous animals and females in heat not permitted.
  • Sedation not recommended due to health risks at altitude.
  • Passenger assumes full responsibility; airline denies liability for injury, loss, illness, or death.

Conditions for cages:

  • Name and address of owner must be attached to cage.
  • Wooden cages (chipboard or plywood) strictly prohibited.
  • Cage must allow animal to lie down, turn around, and stand with head raised without touching cage ceiling.
  • Cages must be secured with zip ties to prevent opening by pets.

Carriage of two animals: Allowed if both weigh under 14kg (30 lbs), are similar size, used to each other, and cage conditions met. Price for single cage applies. Animals over 14kg must be in separate cages.

Freight transport: Large dogs not fitting in approved cages or exceeding 75kg (animal + cage) on transatlantic flights must be transported by freight.

Maximum weight for AVIH on transatlantic flights: 75kg (165 lbs) including animal and cage.
