Service Animals (In-Cabin & Support)

Service dogs accompanied by visually- or hearing-impaired passengers can travel free upon application at the service center.

  • Service dogs for passengers with disabilities may board without a pet carrier if wearing a harness with a training certification attached.
  • No seat is assigned to a service dog; it must sit on the floor in front of the passenger’s seat and not enter the aisle or other passengers’ space.
  • Passengers may be exempt from signing the transportation declaration but might need documents such as quarantine certificates depending on the destination.
U.S. Regulations (effective February 1, 2021):
  • Only trained service dogs are recognized as service animals for passengers with disabilities.
  • Service dogs must be at least 6 months old and specially trained to assist with physical or mental disabilities.
  • Passengers may travel with up to two service dogs.

To request service dog travel, contact the Korean Air Booking Center and submit required forms at least 48 hours before departure. For requests within 48 hours, contact the Booking Center directly.

  • Service dogs must wear a leash or harness during travel.
  • They must behave appropriately, remain under the owner’s control, and not exhibit untrained behaviors such as excessive barking, threatening others, or relieving themselves onboard.
  • A vaccination or quarantine certificate may be required depending on destination regulations; passengers should verify and carry necessary documents.

In-Cabin Carrier Details

Pets permitted on board include dogs, cats, and pet birds over 8 weeks old. Pets 16 weeks or older may be checked in the cargo hold.

  • One animal per passenger is allowed in the cabin; two animals may be transported in the cargo hold.
  • Exceptions for housing pets together in one carrier:
    • A pair of birds
    • Two dogs under six months old
    • Two cats under six months old
  • A total of three pets is allowed per passenger on the aircraft:
    • One pet may be carried in the cabin
    • Two pets may be transported in the cargo compartment as checked baggage
  • The number of pets allowed may vary by aircraft type, cabin class, pet reservation status, and destination country regulations.

Please keep your pet carrier closed and under your assigned seat at all times to ensure safety and comfort for all passengers.

  • Pets must remain inside their carriers in lounges and on board.
  • Changing the shape or expanding the pet carrier is prohibited to prevent obstructions during emergency evacuation.
  • Prepare a clean carrier lined with paper, towels, blankets, or absorbent pads; absorbent pads cannot be replaced on board.
  • Bring a muzzle in case your pet makes noise and follow cabin crew instructions during emergencies.
  • Violations may result in warnings, restrictions, or denial of boarding for your pet.

Provision of food:

  • Feed your pet at least 2 hours before the flight; the International Air Transport Association recommends a light meal at this time.
  • Consult your veterinarian as feeding needs may vary by pet type, size, and health.
  • On board, you may feed your pet food you brought (excluding treats) and water provided, only through an external feeding device without opening the carrier.
  • Check destination country and airport regulations regarding import/export of food and other items.

Pets permitted in cargo hold must be 16 weeks of age or older.

  • You can transport two animals in the cargo hold per passenger.
  • Two dogs under six months old, two cats, or a pair of birds may share one transportation container.

Cargo Hold Pet Conditions

  • Pets must be 16 weeks or older.
  • Total weight of pet plus carrier must be 45 kg (99 lb) or less.
  • Pet carrier dimensions (length + width + height) must be 291 cm (114 in) or less, with height up to 84 cm (33 in).
  • Transport may be restricted if pet and carrier exceed 32 kg (70 lb) in some countries.

Pet Carrier Requirements

  • Enough space for pet to stand, lie down, and move.
  • Water resistant with proper ventilation.
  • Cannot be opened from inside by the pet.
  • Securely fastened with screws; made of sturdy materials like wood or plastic.
  • Immobile with wheels and accessories removed.
  • Your name and telephone number must be written in English and attached outside the carrier.

  • Types of pets allowed: dogs, cats, and pet birds.

  • A ticket must be purchased to request the Traveling with Pets service. A seat designated for pet travel must be selected.
  • If you arrive at the airport without approval, your pet will not be able to fly in the cabin or be transported in the cargo hold.
  • Codeshare flight passengers should check the pet policy of the codeshare partner.
  • Commercial transportation of pets (sales, adoption, event attendance, breeding, research) may be subject to restrictions depending on the destination country.
