Travelling with a Trained Service Dog

  • Notify KLM at least 48 hours before departure to arrange accommodations.
  • Required documentation: certificate of qualified training, health certificate, proof of vaccinations; additional documents may be needed for international travel.
  • At check-in, inform staff and present documentation; staff trained to assist passengers with disabilities.
  • During security screening, service dog stays with owner but may undergo additional screening.
  • Priority boarding is provided to settle with your service dog comfortably.
  • On board, service dogs must fit within your foot space without obstructing aisles and remain under control with harness or leash.
  • For safety, dogs must be secured to the seat belt during all flight phases; extensions or infant belts may be used if needed.
  • Service dogs must be well-behaved; disruptive behavior may lead to crew intervention.
  • Passengers must ensure their service dog will not need to relieve itself onboard; major airports provide relief areas and staff assistance during layovers.
  • Upon arrival, priority disembarkation and assistance are provided.
  • For US flights, submit U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation Forms; documentation submission varies by booking time.
  • From 1 August 2024, dogs (including service dogs) traveling to the US must comply with CDC Dog Import Form requirements, microchipping, and age restrictions.

In-Cabin Pet Carrier Rules

  • Only 1 cat or dog allowed per passenger in Economy Class or Business Class within Europe.
  • Pet must fit in a closed travel bag or kennel with maximum dimensions 46 x 28 x 24 cm (18 x 11 x 9 in).
  • Combined weight of pet and carrier must not exceed 8 kg (17.6 lb).
  • Pet must remain inside the carrier during the flight.
  • Pets are not allowed in the cabin for Premium Comfort Class or Business Class on intercontinental flights due to lack of under-seat space.

  • Up to 3 pets allowed in the hold; they may share a kennel if each weighs no more than 14 kg (31 lb).
  • Permitted combinations: 2 adult animals of comparable size or 3 animals up to 6 months old from the same litter.
  • Combined weight of pet(s) and kennel must be under 75 kg (165 lb).
  • Kennel size limits:
    • KLM flights: max 122 x 81 x 89 cm (48 x 32 x 35 in)
    • KLM European flights with Boeing 737 and Embraer: max 102 x 69 x 76 cm (40 x 27 x 30 in)
  • Pets cannot travel in the hold on Boeing 787-9, Boeing 787-10, Airbus A321neo, Eastern Airways, German Airways flights, or KLC flights longer than 2 hours.
  • Pets are not allowed in the hold if transfer time exceeds 3 hours (except via Paris with minimum 4.5 hours transfer).
  • UK Government embargo prohibits pets traveling as passenger baggage to the UK on KLM flights.

    • Rigid plastic or fibreglass shell
    • Wheels removed or taped
    • Centralized locking system with locks on top and bottom; hinges and pins extend beyond door frame by at least 1.6 cm
    • Two parts of kennel joined by bolts (no lateral closing systems)
    • Two empty containers or one food bowl with two compartments for food and water, fillable from outside
    • Absorbent material on bottom (no straw)
    • Pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside
  • Make reservations for pets in the hold as soon as possible after booking flight, no later than 48 hours before departure.
  • Fees range from EUR 70 to EUR 500 per one-way flight depending on route and departure airport.
