Summary of China Eastern Airlines Small Animals Transport Policy

Small animals such as domesticated dogs, cats and birds are allowed on international flights of China Eastern Airlines departing from China, subject to certain regulations and requirements.

Emotional Support Animals (ESA) Transport to China

China Eastern Airlines includes emotional support dogs under the category of Assistance Dogs for flights to China.

  • Only dogs (including Assistance Dogs such as emotional support dogs) or cats are allowed for importation.
  • One pet or Assistance Dog per passenger is allowed.
  • Must present a valid quarantine certificate and rabies vaccination certificate issued by an official animal quarantine organization of the exporting country or region.
  • Pets or Assistance Dogs must have microchips compliant with ISO 11784 and 11785 standards.
  • Assistance Dogs must have a valid microchip, corresponding owner certificate, and professional training certificate.
  • Assistance Dogs are subject to on-site quarantine examination and may be exempt from 30-day isolation under certain conditions.

Small Animal Transport and Cargo Carrier Requirements

  • Small animals include domesticated dogs, cats, and birds; wild animals and aggressive or unusual animals are excluded.
  • Animals are not allowed in the passenger cabin; they must be transported in the cargo cabin.
  • Total weight of animal plus container and food must not exceed 32 kg.
  • Containers must be dedicated for live animal transport, made of tough materials with firm top and at least three sides ventilated.
  • Container doors must have strong metal lock systems preventing animal escape.
  • Ventilation vents should be metal or round-shaped holes if non-metal.
  • Container must have protruding edges or handles for easy handling.
  • Bottom of container must be stable and secured; rollers must be fixed or removed.
  • Container dimensions must comply with IATA Live Animals Regulations, allowing animal to stand, sit, turn, or lie down comfortably.
  • Container dimensions formula:
    • Length = animal length (nose to tail) + 0.5 × height (elbow to ground)
    • Width = 2 × maximum width of animal
    • Height = height from ear or top of head to ground (ears must not touch container top)
  • Containers must prevent leakage of excretions; absorption pads must be non-toxic.
  • Only one animal per container.
  • For flights over 6 hours, a drinking device must be provided.
  • Containers must be secured with self-locking nylon strips and wrapped with nylon mesh to prevent animal protrusion.
  • Large containers exceeding checked baggage size limits (sum of dimensions > 203 cm) must be transported via cargo channel.
  • Prohibited container types include:
    • Welded iron-wire mesh containers
    • Plastic or fiberglass doors
    • Combination type containers
    • Containers with windows or vents on top
    • Collapsible containers
    • Containers made of soft materials or with soft plastic ventilation grids
  • Animals that are pregnant, under 6 months old, or certain breeds not suitable for air transport are not accepted.
  • Transport will be declined if temperature forecast for any flight segment is below -12°C or above 30°C.
  • Passengers must apply at least 48 hours before departure and complete check-in 90 minutes before takeoff with all required documents.
  • Service charge is based on weight of animal, container, and food, charged at airport according to excess baggage rules.
  • China Eastern Airlines is not liable for injury, illness, escape, or death of animals under normal transport conditions.
