Guide / Assistance Dogs

Cathay Pacific welcomes accredited guide/assistance dogs (including guide, hearing, and service dogs) to travel in the aircraft cabin. Other dogs must travel as pets.

Definition & Accreditation

A guide/assistance dog is trained to help people with physical disabilities, providing greater independence. To fly in cabin, the dog must be accredited by one of the following organizations:

  • Assistance Dogs International
  • Assistance Dogs Europe
  • International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF)

For flight segments of 8 hours or more, travelers should notify Cathay Pacific at least 48 hours in advance. The airline reserves the right to approve or refuse carriage, in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.

Before Your Flight

  1. Ensure that your dog is fully accredited and meets destination and transit country rules (which vary by jurisdiction).
  2. If traveling via or into Hong Kong, apply for a Special Permit from the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department (AFCD).
  3. Contact Cathay Pacific’s local reservations office in advance to notify them that you will bring a guide/assistance dog.

On the Day of Travel

  1. Carry original documentation proving your dog’s accreditation; present these at check-in and arrival.
  2. During flight, a large dog should sit at your feet, while a smaller dog may sit on your lap. The dog must remain leashed or harnessed throughout the flight.
  3. Ensure the dog’s welfare, and be prepared to manage any sanitary needs (e.g. relief breaks) as required.

Note: Cathay Pacific may use discretion over acceptance of the dog, depending on local laws and regulations at departure, arrival, or transit points.
