Service Animals (In-Cabin & Support)

A service animal is defined as an animal individually trained to provide assistance to an individual with a disability.

Service animals assist individuals with various challenges, including:

  • Agoraphobia
  • Autism
  • Epilepsy
  • Mobility impairment
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Psychiatric syndrome
  • Deafness
  • Vision impairment and loss of vision

These animals perform essential tasks such as:

  • Guiding individuals with visual impairments
  • Alerting those with hearing impairments to important sounds or signals
  • Assisting individuals with limited mobility by retrieving items and aiding in wheelchair movement
  • Sensing and alerting individuals to imminent seizures caused by epilepsy
  • Informing people with diabetes about fluctuations in blood sugar levels
  • Providing support to individuals who experience dizziness or unsteadiness
  • Reminding individuals with memory loss to take their medication
  • Initiating emergency calls in critical situations

Conditions for acceptance of service animals:

  • Maximum of two service dogs or one service cat per passenger allowed
  • For travel to the United States: pets must be identified with a microchip
  • For travel to France: pets must be identified with a microchip or a tattoo applied before July 3, 2011, which remains clearly legible
  • For travel to other destinations: pets must be identified with a microchip

In-Cabin Carrier Details

Conditions for accepting and transporting pets in the cabin with Air Tahiti Nui:

  • Only vaccinated cats and dogs are accepted.
  • Pets must be identified as follows:
    • To the United States: microchip required.
    • To France: microchip or tattoo applied before July 3, 2011, and clearly legible.
    • To other destinations: microchip required.
  • Age requirements:
    • Transit through or travel to the United States: cats must be at least 4 months old; dogs at least 6 months old if they have only been in rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past 6 months.
    • Travel to other destinations: cats and dogs must be at least 4 months old.
  • The combined weight of the animal and its carrier must be ≤ 8 kg (17.6 lbs).
  • The pet must remain in an appropriate carrier (soft or rigid) that fits under the seat in front:
    • Maximum dimensions: 40 cm (L) x 35 cm (W) x 20 cm (H) / 15.7 in x 13.7 in x 7.9 in.
    • One carrier per passenger allowed, accommodating up to two small pets if weight and space requirements are met.
  • Availability of in-cabin pet transport is subject to quota per flight.

Mandatory documents:

  • Up-to-date vaccination records.
  • Valid health certificate issued by a veterinarian including weight, size, and breed of the animal. Submit to reservation service at least 48 hours before departure.
  • Printed and completed waiver of responsibility and conditions for bringing a dog or cat into the cabin, to be presented at check-in.
  • Import permit issued by the destination country. Compliance with all import regulations is the traveler's responsibility.

In Cargo Carrier Details

To ensure the safe transport of your pets in the hold, a certified cage according to IATA standards, approved for long-haul air transport, is mandatory. It guarantees the safety and well-being of your pets.

  • The cage consists of two plastic half-shells that fit one on top of the other, secured with metal threaded rods fitted with nuts or wing nuts.
  • The metal door must have four locking rods extending at least 1.6 cm beyond the bottom and top of the cage.
  • The cage has vents on the front, sides, and back for ventilation.
  • The cage must be sized so the animal can turn around, stand, and sit properly without putting its muzzle through the grid.

Acceptance Conditions for Animals in the Hold

  • Animals must be at least 2 months old.
  • Each animal's health book must be up to date.
  • Animals must be identified by a microchip.
  • Rabies vaccinations must be current.
  • A certificate of good health must be issued by a veterinarian.

Requirements for Transporting Dogs

  • Dogs must have resided in one or more rabies-free or low-risk countries during the 6 months before the trip.
  • Dogs must be over 6 months old.
  • Dogs must be identified with a 15-digit ISO-compatible microchip.
  • Rabies vaccinations must be up to date.
  • A health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian, valid on the day of departure, is required.
  • The CDC Dog Import Form receipt is required for entry into the U.S.

Requirements for Transporting Cats

  • Cats must be at least 2 months old.
  • Health records must be current.
  • Cats must be identified with a microchip.
  • Rabies vaccinations must be up to date.
  • A health certificate issued by an authorized veterinarian, valid on the day of departure, is required.
